What is an insect?

We have been learning about insects.  We read a book that told us all about the special features of an insect.  We now know that insects have 6 legs and 3 body parts.  We know that insects have antennae (sometimes we call them feelers).  We know that insects have compound eyes.  Sometimes insects have wings.

This week our super star student award goes to Afreen ...

Afreen is a special member of our class.  She is so quiet and works so hard!   She is an artist, and draws amazing pictures for her classmates to keep!
Afreen uses beautiful manners and is good at thinking of kind things to say to her friends
Afreen is a real bookworm. If you see her in our class library corner she will be snuggled up on a cushion reading the pictures and the words in her favourite books!

Buddy Time with A2

We went to A Block to see our Year 4 Buddies.  They were making a cloak of feathers as part of their learning about Matariki.   Mr O'Sullivan asked us if we could help our big buddies to colour in their feathers.

We did our very very best colouring in and our buddies said we did a super star job - way to go E6!  We can't wait to see A2's class cloak when it is all finished!

Riddhika has a friendly smile and is a kind and caring learning buddy in E6.   She loves to sit and talk with her learning buddy about her ideas and learning.  She is really clever at putting up her hand and sharing her own thinking and ideas with the class.  We love how Riddhika shows lots of
enthusiasm and pride.

Discovery Time

On Friday we had Discovery Time.  We love to make discoveries and explore our thinking while we learn and play together!

This week at Discovery Time we got to be Bug Detectives.   We made a bug garden.   We needed dirt, sticks, leaves, soil and grass clippings.

Mrs Graham hid some little rubber bugs in the bug habitat so that we could discover them.  (Can you remember what the word habitat means?)  We talked lots about where bugs like to live...
Some bugs live under leaves and some bugs live in the grass.
We used magnifying glasses to help us be Bug Detectives!

We had clipboards and we had to record how many bugs we found, and what sort of bugs we found in our bug habitat.

Some of us made playdough bugs.  We had bug photographs to help us look at the features of all the different bugs.  We had a go at making our playdough bugs look just like the bug in the picture.
Pepper Jo's snail is sitting on a leaf!
Jacob is making a centipede.  How many legs does your centipede have Jacob?

We did some teamwork to help each other make our bug!
Anesh is showing Dhruv how to roll a little sausage shapes to make his caterpillar.
Great job Anesh!

Next we wrote a label to match our bug so we could identify it.

Look at our amazing Playdough Bugs!  We took them home to show our families.  Can you tell your family what your bug looks like? How many legs does it have? How many body parts does it have? What colour is your bug?

Some of us just love art and learning to colour in!  We coloured in a bug jar today, and found a picture of our favourite bug to glue into our bug jar.

We practiced writing the name of our bug. We gave it a label so everyone knows the name of the bug we caught.

What fabulous activities we got to choose from this week!
I wonder what discoveries we'll make next Friday?

Our Term 1 Super Star!

This week we went to a special assembly.  Mrs Mander, our Deputy Principal, came along to give a special award to one student from every class at Eastern Hutt School.

The special award is from Mrs Henderson, our school principal.  But she is sick at home in bed so she couldn't come.  We hope she gets better soon.  Mrs Henderson gives this special award at the end of every term.  The children who get this award always give their very very best.  They try hard, give things a go, and show they care about their learning.

In E6 the student who gives their very very best and shows excellence in all that they do is ...

Yusra!

Tino Pai Yusra!
We are so proud of you.
We think you deserve Mrs Henderson's special
Principal's Award.
You are have such a positive attitude towards learning,
and you are so fantastic at giving your
very very best...always!

Well done to all the super star learners in E6 who have just finished their very first term at school!  What amazing learning adventures we have had so far! We all deserve a happy easter, a big rest and a fun holiday

I wonder what adventures we will have at school in Term 2?

Counting Backwards

We have been learning to count backwards in E6.    We know that counting backwards means taking numbers away.

We have been learning to start counting backwards from any given number.  We can count backwards from 10, and some of us can count backwards from 20 or a bit higher.  Starting at a different number is a challenge!

This week we made 'count down' rockets.  We cut out the numbers and had to glue them in the right order to make our rockets blast off.  Look at our clever counting....

Bubbles Bubbles Bubbles!

We have been learning all about brilliant letter Bb.
This week we read a story about bubbles that we took home to read with our families.   We did some bubble blowing and some writing about bubbles.  Come and have a look...

Today we went outside and blew some bubbles.  We put some warm water and some bubbly liquid into a plastic cup.

We used a straw to blow the bubbles up to the top of our cup.

 We blew some big bubbles...
"Bubbles are so pretty" said Afreen.

We blew some little bubbles too!

It was tricky remembering to blow through the straw instead of sucking!  We had to concentrate!

"My bubbles are fluffy" said Riddhika.

"This is the most fun day at school ever!" said Michael

We had lots of fun blowing bubbles.  We had a great time together and laughed a lot.

Our bubbles made us feel happy!

We watched some of our bubbles float up into the sky... some bubbles went over the classroom and over the fence!

Next we went back into our classroom and drew some pictures and wrote some stories about our beautiful bubbles.

Come and read our brilliant bubbles story writing!
