I am a Bug Detective !

Hi E6!   I am at home today with a sore throat and a sore head! I bet you are taking great care of Mrs Chamberlain for me,  and showing her your superstar learning power!

Guess What?  I  bumped into some little bugs at my house!  Some of them creep and crawl.  Some of them fly.   I had to be very brave when I saw them - and remember that even though some bugs look yucky, they can be good bugs!

I took some photos for you to look at.  Have a look at them  I wonder if you know anything about these bugs? We will have to do some investigating and finding out when I get back to school...

This is a weta.
This weta crawled out of the bush.
I found it on my driveway.
Look at those super long feelers on the weta!
I wonder where wetas like to live?

 Look at this stick insect.
It is crawling up the wall of my house.
This stick insect has a long skinny body.
It is brown just like the wood that is stacked in a pile just below it.
Have you ever seen a stick insect?

Eeeek!  I can see a spider!
The spider is living on my washing line peg.
The spider has made a nursery web
for all the baby spiders.

How many legs does a spider have?
Is a spider an insect ... or not?
How do you know?

Here is a very noisy cicada!
I took this photo in March this year when
it landed on my washing line.
Look at the wings.  Look at the cicada's eye.

Look at the butterfly.
It has landed on a flower in my garden.
I can see some wings and some legs.
I wonder why butterflies like flowers?
Do you know what sort of butterfly this is?

Maybe you could leave a comment if you know something about these bugs.

I wonder if you can be a bug detective and see any bugs around your house? You might like to take a photograph of your bug and email it to me - or bring it along to school to show us!

  1. Wow what a lot of bugs and what great photos of them. We were very grossed out at the spider's nest of babies. Ew! What a scary thing to find on your washing peg.
Not many of us have seen a stick insect. But they look look.
Lots of us have seen wetas. We think they like trees, leaves and damp, dark places.
